Nine stories dropped in the GEO world this week, and at least one of them should change how you’re allocating your off-site citation budget right now.

We cover all of it on Episode 3 of The GEO Show. Here’s the roundup, with the receipts.

B2B software buyers are making ChatGPT work five times harder

Nective tested 4,000 prompts and found average ChatGPT fan-out queries rose from 2.17 to 7.61. Software queries alone averaged 10.7 searches per prompt, and sites appeared in 64% of sampled fan-outs.

That’s not a rounding error. That’s a five-to-ten-times increase in the number of searches ChatGPT runs before it answers a single B2B software question. Query fan-out for complex B2B prompts is running well above the average, and every one of those extra searches is a fresh shot at getting your brand retrieved.

The takeaway: the retrieval surface area for B2B SaaS just got a lot bigger. That favors brands with more indexable, citable content, long-tail pages, video repurposing, comparison content. Not fewer, thinner pages hoping to rank for one head term.

Your GA4 numbers are lying to you about AI Overviews traffic

A nine-month dataset covering 51,200 tracked events and 1,661 cited snippets found that 22.4% of detected AI Overview events were attributed to direct traffic instead of organic.

Nearly a quarter of your AI Overview traffic is hiding in your “Direct” channel right now. Add in every click-through from inside the ChatGPT app, which also logs as direct and strips the referral string, and you’re looking at a meaningfully undercounted picture of how much AI search is actually driving to your site.

Stop taking GSC and GA4 at face value. In a zero-click world, your attribution model is lying to you by default, not by exception.

Google found that LLMs know the facts about your brand. They still get them wrong.

Google’s own research found that Gemini 3 Pro and ChatGPT-5 encoded 95 to 90% of tested facts correctly during training, but failed to directly recall 26 to 34% of those same facts. Rare facts and reversed relationships were the hardest to retrieve.

This matters for GEO specifically. Sometimes a model answers instantly from pre-training data. Other times it runs a real-time retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pass. A model can “know” the correct fact about your brand and still surface the wrong one at generation time, because RAG depends on what it finds in search results, not just what it learned.

The implication: training-data accuracy and real-time discoverability are two separate problems. You need both, which means your pages still have to win at conventional SEO to be found when a model goes looking.

Google AI Overviews can now build the interactive tool you were using to capture leads

Search Engine Journal reports Google has started rolling out Generative UI into AI Overviews: custom layouts, simulations, and interactive tools like calculators and comparison charts. It’s already live globally in English in AI Mode, with broader AI Overviews availability expected in the coming weeks.

If your lead-gen strategy depends on gating a calculator or comparison tool behind an email address, read that again. Google’s own AI answer can now reproduce the tool itself, right inside the results page, with no click and no email capture required.

Interactive, conversion-optimized landing pages just picked up a second zero-click threat on top of the first one. It’s time to think past the gated calculator.

ChatGPT ads landed in Europe today

As of August 24, OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT Ads into 31 European markets, initially through its ads solutions team, agencies, and technology partners, with self-service access to follow. The platform now supports conversion optimization, geo-targeting, custom audiences, Pixel, and Conversion API measurement. That’s the full performance-marketing stack.

We’ve been running ChatGPT Ads for clients for a couple of months now, limited mostly to the US. The floodgates just opened for European targeting, and the tooling arrived fully formed, not as a beta.

Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations collapsed 86% in three days

This is the story of the week. According to Promptwatch, Reddit’s average citation share in ChatGPT responses fell from 3.83% to 0.52% between August 14 and August 17, an 86% collapse across millions of monitored AI responses. Reddit says the cause is unknown and hasn’t ruled out a collection issue on its end.

A huge share of the GEO community has spent the last two years optimizing almost exclusively for Reddit threads. That bet just got a lot riskier, whether this turns out to be a real algorithmic shift or a temporary data glitch.

A citation strategy concentrated in one off-site channel, any channel, is a single point of failure.

The lesson isn’t “abandon Reddit.” It’s that you diversify into editorial coverage, review sites (especially if you sell software), earned PR placements, and content repurposing, starting with video. YouTube hasn’t just held steady through this. It remains the number one citation source across Google’s AI properties.

YouTube citations are now measurable at the creator level

Profound has shipped a YouTube citation breakdown that identifies cited channels, individual videos, and video categories, including each channel’s share of citations.

Pair this with the Reddit collapse above and the pattern is obvious: measure your YouTube channel’s share of voice with the same rigor you apply to your website. It’s owned media. A citation to your video that someone actually watches builds brand favorability the same way a citation to your blog post does. Profound tracking this at the creator level is a strong signal that YouTube deserves a fixed line item in your GEO measurement, not an afterthought.

Even “stable” brand content is feeding LLMs bad facts about you

Profound analyzed more than 158,000 evaluated AI claims and found engine-level inaccuracy rates of 4.3 to 6.8%. Pricing and billing errors made up 24% of inaccurate claims despite being only 12% of claims evaluated. 51% of brands had at least one inaccurate claim tied to earned media; 54% had one tied to their own owned content.

Pricing is the obvious failure point. Plenty of B2B SaaS companies hide pricing behind a “talk to sales” button, which pushes the actual number out into a patchwork of third-party mentions and stale forum posts. That’s exactly the kind of source an LLM will confidently misquote. If you run any kind of PLG or self-serve motion, transparent, current pricing on your homepage isn’t just a conversion best practice anymore. It’s a GEO accuracy control.

Stale pricing, packaging, integrations, and certifications need continuous monitoring on-site and off-site. A single inaccurate claim from an LLM can cost you a lead before you ever know it happened.

Commercial intent inside ChatGPT is rising fast

Profound classified a year-long sample of 7.5 million conversations and found commercial intent share rose from 13.9% to 19.2% between June 2025 and June 2026: roughly 533 million weekly commercial conversations, up from 243 million a year earlier.

The intent is there, and it’s growing. If you’ve already put budget behind ChatGPT as a performance and GEO channel, this is the evidence that decision backs up. It’s still early. That’s the opportunity, not a caveat.

The bottom line

Four moves to make out of this week’s nine stories:

  • Diversify your citation sources before an algorithm update forces the issue. Reddit just showed what concentration risk looks like in real time.
  • Measure YouTube like you measure your website. It’s owned media, it’s the top citation source across Google’s AI properties, and it’s now trackable at the creator level.
  • Keep pricing current and visible. Gated pricing is a GEO accuracy control failure waiting to happen, not just a conversion tax.
  • Don’t trust your GA4 dashboard on AI traffic. Nearly a quarter of AI Overview events are hiding in “Direct” right now.

Don’t wait for the next algorithm shock to diversify your citation strategy. Start measuring where you actually stand.
